Zantac® is a type of medication with histamine-2 blockers that help decrease the amount of acid created by the stomach. Zantac’s manufacturer, Sanofi, in October of 2019, announced a voluntary recall of its over-the-counter brand-name heartburn drug Zantac due to it containing N-Nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), which may cause cancer in humans.
Heartburn can be frustrating to manage and can also be incredibly painful. Trying to live without heartburn by taking medication should not also come with worries that a medication may potentially cause cancer.

Zantac Voluntary Recall
Zantac is sold both over the counter and as a prescription and is one of the H2 (histamine-2) blockers used to decrease the amount of acid in the stomach. Over the counter versions are used to treat common conditions such as heartburn and indigestion. Prescription options of the product are also available to treat and prevent more severe conditions, such as ulcers and gastroesophageal reflux disease.
Zantac manufacturer Sanofi recalled certain batches of the drug in October 2019 amid concerns that they may contain NDMA, a possible carcinogen. The recall included:
Zantac 150®Cool Mint
Several U.S. pharmacy retailers, including Walmart, CVS, Walgreens and Rite Aid, removed Zantac from their shelves in the days and weeks leading up to the recall.
Multiple manufacturers of generic versions of the popular antacid also announced recalls, including Appco Pharma and Northwind Pharmaceuticals in January 2020. Mylan also recalled batches of a similar prescribed antacid, nizatidine, due to the presence of the potentially toxic substance.
The FDA asked all manufacturers of generic prescription and over-the-counter ranitidine to immediately withdraw the products from the U.S. market on April 1, 2020.
Zantac Cancer Lawsuit Update: December 2021
On November 29, 2021, the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida issued Pretrial Order #69 in MDL-2924, In re: Zantac (Ranitidine) Products Liability Litigation (the “Zantac litigation”). The order by Judge Robin L. Rosenberg, who is overseeing the case for the U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation, addresses the selection of plaintiffs whose cases may proceed to bellwether trials, and sets out steps for the parties to follow until the court rules on any Daubert motions. As of November 15, 2021, the Zantac litigation has a total of 1,827 cases, with 1,777 of them active. It also includes more than 150,000 claimants who have registered claims.
Types of Cancer to be Included in Zantac Trial
According to Pretrial Order #69, in January 2021, the Plaintiffs’ Leadership Counsel (PLC) named ten types of cancer that they planned on litigating. They removed two types of cancer, breast and kidney, from that list two days before the court issued Pretrial Order #69. The current list of cancers stands as follows:
The parties may eventually narrow the list of cancers further.
Related to the taking of Zantac heartburn medications, you may be eligible to join the Zantac class action lawsuit and eligible for substantial compensation.
Laboratory tests indicate that NDMA can cause cancer in humans. The FDA began investigating it and similar toxins in blood pressure and heart failure medications in 2018 and says that it has found “unacceptable levels” of NDMA in some ranitidine products.
Though the side effects of Zantac listed above can be severe, it is vital that you talk with your doctor before you stop taking any medications.
